WHAT IS THE 2-22 DAY OF SERVICE?

The 2-22 Day of Service was started to honor the life and legacy of our founder, Missionary Lucy  Virginia Williams.  2-22-17 is the day that this dedicated servant-leader transitioned to her heavenly home.  The LVW Foundation decided that the best way to commemorate her life of love and service to others, is to serve others all day.

The first Day of Service took place on 2-22-18 and the day has grown to allow us to serve more people ever since.  This year, our primary service project is the installation and dedication of our first Clothes Closet at PACE Senior Living Center in Charlotte, NC.  We are also implementing a "Look Good Feel Good" monthly barber service for our PACE family.  Please see details below for additional information.

Feel free to join us in our Day of Service by volunteering for one of our service projects, donating items for the PACE Clothes Closet, donating funds or pledging to do a Random Act of Kindness on your own.  Listed below are various service projects and Random Acts of Kindness that you can do on your own.   We would love to hear about them and even see pics and videos if you'd like to send them.   Join us!

2-22 SERVICE SUGGESTIONS

DO A Random Act of Kindness

  • Provide lawn maintenance for a senior or person dealing with illness
  • Buy a coffee or danish for the person behind you in line
  • Donate your gently used (washed) clothes or shoes to Salvation Army or Goodwill
  • Buy 10 foot-long turkey or chicken subs from a grocery store deli (they are usually cheaper than a chain), have them cut the subs in half and wrapped individually.  Buy 20 pieces of fruit (apples, bananas), put a sandwich and piece of fruit in the store's bags individually and give them to 20 homeless people.
  • Have  lunch with a young relative or loved one at their school and allow them to talk about anything they want.

BE A READING BUDDY

  • Sign up at your local school as a reading buddy.  You must complete the registration and background check process but it is well worth it.
  • The need for readers for grades 1-5 is VERY high in most elementary schools
  • Teachers are often overwhelmed and need assistance.  Once you're registered in the system, check with teachers to see what assistance you can provide them.
  • The kids will benefit from the one-on-one reading assistance and will grow to rely you to help them improve their reading comprehension skills
  • You can also become a reader for pediatric wards in hospitals.  Call your local pediatric hospital and get the requirements to register as a reading buddy.  It is needed.

become a sitter for a senior home or hospital

  • Hospitals and nursing homes have a dire need for people to simply sit with patients
  • Patients who need round the clock care often use sitters as the nurses and staff are too busy to remain in one room.
  • Call your local hospital or senior/nursing home to confirm registration requirements for sitters
  • While you're there, you can also become a reading buddy for your patient.  I'm sure they will appreciate it.

SIMPLE BUT IMPORTANT SERVICE OPTIONS

  • Hug a loved one that you NEVER hug and let them know how much you love them and WHY you love them specifically.  What are their unique qualities that make them the special person they are?
  • Compliment a co-worker who deserves it.  You never know how much they may need to hear it.
  • Spend some time with a senior relative or loved one simply listening to them.  Seniors are often ignored, over-looked or simply not included in things.  They often feel invisible.
  • Spend quality time with your family.  Have a family dinner where everyone sits at the same table or in the same room with no electronics allowed.  Make a list of questions that everyone has to answer.  Make it fun.
  • Get a post it note pad and write kind notes for your children or  spouse in the morning or before bed.  You can also leave kind notes for your co-workers.  Leave them in a place where they will see it to brighten their day.

NO ACT OF SERVICE IS TOO GREAT OR TOO SMALL
